The history of the Labrador Retriever is a long and complex one. Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland, Canada as a smaller, shorthaired dog of many uses. They were then established with the English Kennel Club in England in the year 1904. From continued use as a gun dog to a guide dog for the deaf, the Labrador Retriever has definitely made its mark in history and is now known for being one of the most versatile and useful breeds of dog today.
Their appearance has remained generally the same throughout the years. It is a dog breed that is incredibly strong and powerful. They have a very short straight topcoat with a softer, waterproof undercoating. Their appearance is one of the most favored features of the Labrador Retrievers, but the most appealing aspect of all is their temperament. They are incredibly affectionate, friendly and energetic dogs, and because they are generally free of aggression they are ideal as family pets, even those with younger aged children.
In the earlier years, Labrador Retrievers were used for actual fishing, as the fishermen would need a small dog to get in and out of the boat. It was also important that the dog have a short, waterproof coat, in order to avoid having large amounts of water coming into the boat as the dog came in and out. The Labrador Retriever was perfectly suitable for this, and they also had a natural strong retrieving instinct to help retrieve fish and swimming lines.
By the time the turn of the century came about, Labrador Retrievers were appearing in the British Kennel Club’s events and while there have been strains of Labradors up to this time it is still unknown just how many of these dogs were folded into Labradors or into other breeds as the registrations began to separate. Labradors were first imported to the United States during World War I, and it was then that they began being used more as a gun dog.
